Choosing the right stone benchtop is not only about looks. Each material has its own character, performance, and ideal use case. Below is a simple guide to help you decide what works best for your home or project.
Marble
Marble is often chosen for designer and architectural projects, where uniqueness and natural beauty are a priority.
Each slab is completely unique, with natural veining and character that cannot be replicated. Marble looks stunning in feature kitchens, vanities, and statement islands.
However, marble is a softer natural stone and requires proper care.
All marble benchtops should be treated with a high-quality penetrating sealer, which helps reduce the absorption of water, oils, and stains. We recommend resealing approximately every three months, depending on usage.
Marble suits clients who value aesthetics and are happy to maintain their stone properly.
Granite
Granite is an excellent choice for kitchen benchtops, especially for clients who prefer natural stone with strength and durability.
It is harder than marble, highly resistant to heat and scratches, and performs very well in busy kitchens. Granite is also suitable for outdoor areas, including BBQ and alfresco kitchens.
Granite offers a timeless, natural look with excellent long-term performance.
Engineered Stone
Engineered stone is a highly versatile and practical option for modern kitchens.
It offers:
Consistent colour and pattern
Excellent resistance to stains and moisture
Low maintenance
Wide range of designs, including marble-look finishes
Engineered stone does not absorb oils or liquids like natural stone, making it ideal for family kitchens and high-use areas.
For outdoor applications, such as BBQ areas, only UV-resistant engineered stone should be used. Standard engineered stone is not suitable for exterior use unless it is specifically designed for outdoor exposure.
Our Recommendation
There is no single “best” stone — the right choice depends on your design, lifestyle, and where the benchtop will be used.
