We often get asked by clients whether to choose a 20mm or 40mm stone benchtop. Both options look great, but they differ in appearance, fabrication process, installation time, and cost. Below is a clear breakdown to help you choose what suits your project best.
20mm Stone Benchtop
A 20mm benchtop is a popular and practical choice for many residential projects.
Advantages:
Faster fabrication and installation, usually around one week
Easier transportation and handling on site
Clean, modern, and minimalist look
More cost-effective compared to 40mm
Ideal for standard kitchens and apartments
This option works well when timelines and budget are key considerations, while still delivering a high-end finish.
40mm Stone Benchtop
A 40mm benchtop delivers a more solid, premium appearance and is often specified in high-end designer projects.
What makes it different:
The fabrication process is significantly more labour-intensive
Each edge is mitred at 45°, carefully prepared, glued, reinforced, and polished
Returns are bonded underneath, and additional detailing such as chamfers and polishing of the lower edge is required
In some cases, fabrication can take up to three times longer than a 20mm benchtop
Large kitchen islands, for example 3000 × 1200 mm, can weigh up to 300 kg, which makes delivery and installation more complex and requires careful planning. As a result, lead times usually extend to two weeks or more.
The result:
A bold, solid stone appearance
Seamless vein matching through the thickness
A timeless, premium finish that will last for many years
While a 40mm benchtop is a higher investment, the final outcome is a striking feature piece that adds long-term value and presence to your space.
